The "game" of making money by writing a book changed around five years ago. No longer is it a game of "try to hit a home run one-handed" but today anyone can reliably make money by writing a book. What's more, you can do it direct to your customers and don't need any pesky agents or pubishers to deal with.
Here's the best part though: you can even have others go out there and find customers so you don't have to.I'm not kidding when I saw that I have hundreds of people out there promoting by books for me.
What am I talking about? I'm talking about the "e-book". This is a book (usually non-fiction) in electronic format, usually a PDF. You can write it yourself (or hire others to help you) and then put it on a very basic web site. When people visit your site, some of them will go all the way and buy your book.
You get paid straight into your bank account or Paypal account. The more visitors you get to your site, the more money you make. You can get even more visitors by offering others a commission to sell your book. Because your costs of creating each extra book are zero (this is digital, remember) then you lose nothing by letting others sell your book and you only stand to win by making yet more sales.
Don't be put off by the idea that "owning a web site" and "accepting payments" is difficult. I used to think this but I was wrong. It is incredibly easy to do and you don't need any technical skills. And if you still think that writing a book is difficult then let me tell you something: if you can write an email to a friend then you can write a book. In fact, this "conversational" style is what sells best on the internet these days.
